ABSTRACT EXPRESSION New paintings by Arlene Dubo
For 30 years my work has been inspired by an idea that intrigues me about internal or external nature. But painting without knowing what the outcome will be about or look like is now my preferred process. There is freedom in not knowing. At peace with and motivated by not knowing, I focus on the act of mark-making and moving color around.
This process is meditative and keeps me in the creative moment for prolonged periods of time. It hones my understanding of the language of art making and takes me in new directions. It enables me to worry less and cope better with the difficult times we live in. I’m excited to present this work to you now.
As a child, I spent most of my time exploring nature at the foot of the Niagara Escarpment in Hamilton, ON. When it was partly shaved to accommodate Highway 403, I was deeply affected. Today, over half a century later, the experience of losing nature is echoed in much of my work.
Eschewing the graphic depiction of the natural world’s destruction, I prefer to focus on our connectedness to nature by exploring what’s natural within and beyond us. This is because I think that it is not the fear of losing nature that would inspire the changes I want to see in this world, but rather, the understanding of our kinship to it.
While we are closed, these paintings are currently on display and are for sale at Sissiboo Coffee Bar and Gallery. Shipping is extra or, curb-side pick-up can be arranged. For more info and how to purchase simply contact Arlene Dubo at firstname.lastname@example.org
